About Arcadea Disability Arts CIO

Creativity Belongs to Everyone
At Arcadea Disability Arts CIO, we believe that art has the power to connect, inspire, and transform — and that there is an artist inside everyone.
Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, we’ve proudly supported and celebrated the creative voices of disabled artists across the North East since 1991.
For three decades, we’ve provided safe, welcoming spaces where learning disabled, autistic, and neurodivergent artists can explore their creativity, develop skills, and share their talents with the world.
Our work is founded on a simple belief:
Creativity reduces isolation, improves wellbeing, and builds community.
What We Do
At the heart of Arcadea is our daily studio called The HUB. This is a lively and inclusive space where creativity flourishes.
Each session is led by local professional artists, supported by qualified support staff, ensuring that every artist is encouraged to express themselves confidently and freely.
Our studio artists work across many art forms — from painting and sculpture to music, performance, and digital media — creating work that challenges perceptions, celebrates difference, and inspires others.
Youth Club
Our weekly youth club The ICEBOX for learning disabled and autistic young people is a fun, creative, and social space to try new things and meet new friends.
Here, young artists can explore their imagination, build confidence, and express themselves in a safe, supportive environment.
Creativity becomes a bridge — reducing loneliness and helping young people feel part of something special.
Sensation Studio
Our Sensation Studio sessions are designed specifically for learning disabled and autistic women.
In a calm, welcoming space, participants use art to explore self-expression, relaxation, and connection.
These sessions focus on wellbeing, confidence, and community, helping women build meaningful relationships through creativity.
Collaboration & Celebration
Arcadea artists don’t just create within our studio — they also take part in important local and national arts projects.
Through these collaborations, we encourage cross-disciplinary work, connection, and celebration across the arts.
Our artists share ideas, showcase their creativity, and help shape a more inclusive cultural landscape — where disabled voices are heard, valued, and celebrated.
Our Vision
We imagine a world where disabled artists are recognised and celebrated for their creativity and contribution to culture.
Through our studios, youth and women’s programmes, and collaborative projects, we’re building a vibrant, inclusive arts community — one that reflects and celebrates the richness of human creativity.
